So far, so good!5
Purchased this West Bend model after hours of research on the internet. Was unwilling to risk problems associated with other brands/models. I was looking for something under [...], reliable, relatively quiet, easy to use, preferrably stainless (although not absolutely necessary) and of course, made a good loaf of bread. I also liked the fact that this one was a little smaller than others I considered. So far, I'm very happy with this machine, and if it continues to hold up over time, I will continue to pass on good reviews.

***Update 9/2009 I've learned the key to good bread is, of course, having a good recipe, and using yeast specifically made for bread machines. I've found two recipes I really like on [...] and am passing this on to help others avoid wasting time and money like I did! (The two I am using are the whole wheat w/cereal, and the raisin cinnamon. I don't know that the flour makes a lot of difference, but I'm also using the Gold Medal mixed with Hodgson's Mill Whole Wheat, and putting in the extra cinnamon and a bit more raisins for the other recipe.) Easy and delicious! I'm very glad I bought this machine and started making bread that is so much healthier and tastier than most of what you find at the local supermarket!

Still Working After All These Years.5
Though the shape and design has changed over the years, my West Bend is still going strong. It was given to me as a gift at least ten years ago.

Making bread has never been easier. Pour in water. Dump in flour, salt and yeast. Push button. The bread machine does everything else, including that dreadful kneading.

I've experimented many times by adding garlic, olives, cheese, pepperoni, or whatever I can think of. I lessen slightly the amount of water when tossing in wet ingredients such as black olives. It's fun and the bread is delicious.

If this West Bend ever fails I will seek another.

Fantastically Easy5
I'm a novice breadmaker, but the West Bend machine is just what I was hoping it would be. Easy to use and super easy to clean. And the bread is terrific, with a nice crust.

The construction of this book, first of all, is wonderful. The cover is hard and the binding is heavy, enameled spiral. Each page lays flat on the counter, or you can hold the book open on one arm while doing something with the other hand. This suggests that Betty Crocker wrote her bread-baking cookbook with serious use in mind. She certainly tested her recipes. A variety of bread machines were used, which means that each recipe was tested a number of different times. Betty tells you exactly what kind of flour she used, as well as salt, size of eggs, kind of yeast, etc. She leaves nothing to chance.

when I bought my bread machine a year ago I was really excited about buying a cookbook to try it out. I found so many books, and most of the reviews said "buy this one it's the best", or "you won't need another one"... I got all confused. So, since I have most Betty Crocker cookbooks, I choose this one, 'cause I know they only have try and true recipes. In fact, it didn't let me down.
The book starts with an introduction about bread machines in general, how they work, and ingredients. It has a chart with all kinds of flours and teaches you what kind of bread you'll get.
Then the recipes. Including here, classics like white bread, Sally Lunn, garlic bread. New ones like orange capuccino brad. It has one of the best bagel recipe.
It's divided in 7 chapters:
Chapter 1: Good and Savory loaves
Chapter 2: Wholesome Grains Loaves
Chapter 3: Fruit and Veggie Harvest Loaves
Chapter 4: Smaller Can Be jst Right
Chapter 5: Rustic Loaves and Flatbreads

The book has plenty of pictures, and this, especially for a beginner, is pretty important to know what it will look like the bread you are gonna bake.

A year later, I find myself still using this fantastic book and having excellent results. It has over 130 recipes so it's impossible to get bored.

Breads lack variety in consistency but info/reasearch great3
  There are several very positive comments that I have about this book. First, the recipes were tested on all 3 sizes of loaves. Therefore, sometimes proportions of ingredients will not necessarily agree with proportions of bread weight in order to get the same bread. I was happy to have someone else go through these tests so that I didn't have to. Another interesting element to this book is that they show pictures of how "wrong" breads look and list what possible ingredients were out of proportion. This is very helpful in analyzing the outcome of your bread. Finally, I am a picture person and all of the breads have beautiful pictures next to them.
  The big negative I found in the book was that all of the breads I made (about 7) had the same consistency. If you are interested in creating more interesting types of breads, such as light airy french breads with crunchy crusts or ciabatta's - you will be hard pressed to find them in this book.

Great variety of breads plus easy to follow instructions5
This excellent bread machine cookbook covers a wide variety of bread types, from standard loaves to multigrains to fruit breads to related items such as rolls, pizza, and coffee cakes. The instructions for each recipe are clearly broken down into easily understandable steps; although some of the breads involve decorative touches that appear difficult, simple sidebar illustrations make these fancy finishes a breeze. The full-page photographs accompanying many of the recipes definitely make your mouth water as well as give some wonderful suggestions for how you can use each type of bread (however, as an earlier reviewer mentioned, I would have preferred to see every recipe illustrated). Overall, I would recommend this cookbook to anyone looking for bread machine recipes ranging from the simple to the more creative.

good deal - we're happy with it4
We bake a loaf about every 5 days, usually basic white or honey wheat. We've also made herb breads, seed breads and pizza dough. This is our first and only bread machine so we've nothing to compare it to, but seems great to us. The loaves are beautiful and almost always perfect - we've only had one loaf that didn't turn out (don't know why). There's a timer that lets us set it up the night before and wake to the smell of fresh bread baking... mmmm...... The paddle does tend to take a largish chunk of bread with it when the loaf comes out of the pan. The writing is hard to read as others have said, but we use the default setting 95% of the time so we don't have to read anything - just hit start. For an inexpensive breadmaker, it's really great. We've had ours 7 months.

This Breadmaker is exactly what I had hoped for. In all my years of skirting around purchasing a Breadmaker, I never realized how easy it would be to use one and then we found this one on Amazon.com. My husband is the primary cook in our 2-member family, we are retired senior citizens, and he is very pleased. The breads are delicious and there was no trial/error period! The aroma of fresh cooking bread is so good! We find ourselves waiting anxiously for the end of the cooking cycle, slice it after it's cooled, get out the butter/margarine and enjoy a very small piece and critique it. No failures! Not too shabby!!5
This is my first bread machine and it's a beauty! My first loaf was a failure, but the 2nd, 3rd and 4th have been simply delicious. I believe the trick is to sift your flour thoroughly and remove immediately after baking (don't use the 'warm' option). Gotta go...there's bread to be made! ha ha
P.S. Don't be fooled amazon shoppers...this is the exact same model as the 'Breadman TR520'. They're roughly the same price, yet the Melitta has free shipping...or at least it did when I purchased it.

Has lots of options, and makes very good bread4

The Panasonic SD-YD250 is pretty much the state of the art in bread machine technology in mid-2003. It's one of the larger units around with a 2.5 lb. loaf capacity. This size will also eat up your counter or cupboard space: you need just under 14" of width and height, and 10" of depth, so keep that in mind when you order.

The bread consistency is excellent. It's even pretty good in the "rapid" mode, though the results are a bit better in the standard bake mode so that's what I generally use. Also, the "rapid" mode for whole wheat or multigrain bread is 3 hours (vs. 5 hours standard), so it's not like you can start the machine at the beginning of a meal and expect completed bread before you leave the table. The fastest full cycle -- "rapid" bake mode for white bread -- is 1hr 55min.

The SD-YD250 is quieter than most earlier bread makers; however, you'll still hear the clicking and whirring as it mixes and kneads the dough. It's a neat idea to wake up to the smell of freshly-baked bread but the machine isn't quiet enough to run in the bedroom unless you're a VERY sound sleeper.

The options for this machine include the following:
o basic/rapid bake
o immediate start/timer delay
o white/whole wheat/multigrain
o sandwich (soft crust)
o crust color light/medium/dark
o raisin (pause and beep to add fruit or nuts)
o dough knead without bake
o bake without dough knead

Note that not all of these options can be combined. For instance: you only get crust color selection for white bread, and sandwich mode for white and whole wheat; multigrain bread always has a dark, tough crust (although the bread inside the crust is moist and well-textured).

The container inside really is nonstick (based on my not-so-lengthy use since I bought it) and the kneading blade does very little damage to the finished loaf. Ease of use and cleanup are both excellent.

Bread results are quite sensitive to variations in the ingredients in either weight, consistency, or age. Always use fresh BREAD flour and fresh yeast (bread machine yeast recommended) and the right amount of salt, sugar, and flour. The recipes in the included book specify flour weight in units like 16 3/4 oz., so it's HIGHLY RECOMMENDED that you get a digital kitchen scale for good results. Note that this will require still more counter space.

Summary: a very good machine, but you'll need a fair amount of counter space and attention to details to get the best results from it.

Panasonic Rules5
You get what you pay for in this world and the Panasonic SD-YD250 is a perfect example. Quiet as a mouse. No jumping around the counter and whining and improperly mixing as a Breadman we purchased (and returned) did. Had another Panasonic for 8 years. Decided to replace it when the pan seal failed and we checked out the cost of a replacemtnt pan (not realizing we could replace just the paddle mechanism/seal.) Thought we could get by on the cheap with the Breadman. Wrong. If you are looking for a rock solid, flexible unit that turns out a perfect loaf time after time (up to 2.5 lbs), this is your bread machine. The automatic yeast dispenser is a great feature, particulary if you use the timer. Spend the [money].

No problem with the Oz and really outdoes the Philips5
I purchased this machine as a replacement for a Philips bread machine I've had for a couple of years. It's the third bread machine I've purchased for myself, and had bought its predecessor (the SD-250) for my Parents some time ago. My Philips packed up (the bread tin broke away from its base), and they don't make spares, so I have to throw the whole machine in the bin - definitely won't buy another Philips anything. My parents have been most impressed with the Panasonic, and it's been personally recommended to me by other people, so after reading all the reviews on Amazon.com I decided to buy one.

So, to the point, I'm thoroughly impressed with this machine. It is solid and quiet. I took the first loaf I made with it and sliced it to find an absolutely even loaf (even from the 1:55 rapid mode). All the other machines I've had have had some level of streaking or unevenness in the bread.

As for all the other criticism of the recipe book for its use of weight rather than volume measurements for flour, it is a far more accurate way of measuring flour for any baking. Also the manual has since been updated (no doubt as a result of these criticisms), and now shows the approximate volume equivalents in all the recipes.

I HAVE BEEN USING HODGSON BREAD MIX PRODUCTS SINCE I PURCHASED A BREAD MACHINE. I HAVE USED THE 9 GRAIN MIX,THE CARAWAY RYE,ACTUALLY ALL THE MIXES. I HAVE BEEN VERY SATISFIED WITH THESE PRODUCTS AND HAVE RE-ORDERED MANY TIME. ACTUALLY , IHAVE A SHIPMENT ON THE WAY. THEY ALWAYS ARRIVE INTACT IN GOOD CONDITION. I WILL CONTINUE ORDERING. Easy to Make, Tastes Great5
I've made this bread a couple of times and it is very easy to make since only warm water and butter is needed in addition to the boxed ingredients. Tastes great and I've used it for healthy sandwich bread; although, I have found it for less than $3 a box at the grocery store.

This is very good bread mix. It works out to less than three dollars a loaf. It actually tastes like bread. It is very tasty and has good texture.Much better than the bread you buy at the store. Plus when you make it at home it is always fresh. I will be trying the rye and plain white next.

Great bread machine4
My sister-in-law bought this bread machine first and let me taste the butter and bread that it made. I fell in love with it so I had to have it. I make the butter first and when I take the butter out, there is always a little left. I add the ingredients for the rolls to it. My rolls are the best. I take them to work when we have pot luck and everyone says my rolls are better then the ones that they make in their bread machines. The only problem I have with this machine is what most everyone has. The bread it makes is to big if you want to use it for regular sandwiches. I still love it.

Really Easy and Authentic Tasting Bread - without the Work5
Before I continue, you must know that I do bake bread from scratch, without using the breadmachine at all, sometimes only using it for kneading. However, when you're short on time and want real bread (vs cotton available at the stores), then the breadmachine is a life saver. That said, this bread requires minimal work (if measuring out 1 1/4c water, dumping in the mix, and making a dent in the mix with a spoon for the yeast counts as work at all). The taste is that of genuine SF sourdough bread that I fell in love with when I visited SF. Yes, the dough does look a bit wet while in the machine during the knead cycle, and yes, you could add less water, but on french bread cycle, on medium curst, the bread turns out light and fluffy and golden brown and perfect. Most imporantly, it tastes delicious. Even my finicky eater fiance loved it and that's the greatest testament to this bread mix. Wish they had more available :(

Easiest sourdough around4
This is probably the most foolproof bread machine mix around and it tastes great. Since you don't have to add oil or butter, the process of starting a loaf in the bread machine takes about 45 seconds and is completely mindless. With NY City water and a William Sonoma bread maker, the rapid bake setting works best to make the loaf a little denser (two hours 5 minutes). The recommended amount of water, 1 and 1/4 cups, seemed a little wet to me. i would try just under that amount. Overall, I would highly recommend this mix...It also has worked well with my own sourdough culture for added flavor.

The Best Bread Machine Book I Have Ever Used!5
I have several breadmaking books I use with my bread machine, and this is by FAR my favorite (I have the update 2002 Hermes House Edition, but it is essentially the very same book)! Receipes are very easy to follow (no impossible to find ingredients), and directions are concise. I have yet to have a receipe turn out anything but a wonderful, tasty loaf of bread... and the aroma is to die for!!! I love the numerous photographs too! Buy this book if you are thinking of buying ANY breadmachine book! 5 Stars!

THIS IS A GREAT COOKBOOK!5
This is the best bread machine cookbook I have ever seen. The recipes are delicious and easy to follow, unlike those in some bread machine cookbooks where the print is too small, too faint to be seen, or which irritatingly instruct one to follow the instructions that come with one's bread machine in regards to the order of adding ingredients. (This last is ridiculous as the order of adding ingredients depends on the yeast you use and whether you plan to use a delayed bake setting not on your model of bread machine.) The recipes in the book are each accompanied by a large colored photo of the finished bread so that you can get a good idea what it will look like before you start baking. This is very useful for me as I am a very visually oriented person and like to see what the results should look like before I start cooking. It also helps me choose which bread I would like to bake that day.
I also like the colored photos that accompany the explanation of what can go wrong in baking as it is difficult to get a mental image of these in prose only copy and it is tedious to slog through a long list of possible mistakes looking for just the one you are interested in fixing.
I have a Sunbeam 5891 bread machine, which is just about the cheapest cost-wise on the market nowadays and bread made in it using these recipes turns out great every time. I am the house manager for a small private girl's dorm and all the girls use the cookbook and the machine with perfect results every time. Everybody agrees it is a great cookbook and I heartily recommend it to anyone seeking to make bread in a bread machine.

I have never had a bad loaf with this book! I use the updated Hermes House edition (2002)(Cooks Encyclopedia version) but essentially the same great book! You can't go wrong with this one! I have used it with my great TR888 and TR700 bread machines and I make at least 2 loaves a week.

Still Working 13 years Later5
I make a wide variety of breads (white, wheat, sweet, sourdough, etc.) about once a week, both from mixes as well as from scratch. Sure they're squarish, and the tops are sometimes weird, but the taste is great and they never burn. The interior mixing/baking pan is metal as is the paddle. Recently reading reviews of the new features of the Zojirushi X20, such as being able to open the lid to check how the dough looks/feels, a dough cycle, a viewing window, three crust color choices, these were already incorporated in this machine when I brought it in 1996. This model is a great machine.

Tasty and Healthy across the board5
This book consists of all whole grain bread machine recipes. The first part goes into detail about all the components necessary to create healthy breads/rolls, etc. in the bread machine. All ingredients are described in an easy to read manner. There are recipes using "ordinary" whole wheat flours. Then there are the recipes using the more exotic flours, such as spelt and kamut. While some of these flours are expensive and sometimes hard to find, I have tried many of the recipes and have never been disappointed. I have purchased the book many times for friends and recommend it highly as a means to increase fiber and grains in products that are very tasty and are created from this easy to understand recipe book.

Fantastic Tasting and Healthy!5
This book has great recipes for wholegrain breads. If you're looking for recipes that avoid white flour and have healthy wholegrains instead, this is the book for you.

For the most part, it is also low sugar, which is why I purchased it. There are a few recipes with honey and molasses, though. My husband has raved about all the breads I've made from this book. It gives recipes for 1 and 1 1/2 pound loaves.

Good for baking with whole grains5
This is a great book for anyone who owns a bread machine and wants to make different types of whole grain breads. I have found many whole grain baking bread books, but none that were specically targeted for the bread machine. This book is made specifically for bread machine bakers, which is great. She explains all the different types of flours, grains, etc. This is very helpful to learn how to make appropriate subsitutions, etc. I really like this book and am looking forward to consuming a wide variety of whole grain breads!

Easy to Make, Tastes Great5
I've made this bread a couple of times and it is very easy to make since only warm water and butter is needed in addition to the boxed ingredients. Tastes great and I've used it for healthy sandwich bread; although, I have found it for less than $3 a box at the grocery store.

This is very good bread mix. It works out to less than three dollars a loaf. It actually tastes like bread. It is very tasty and has good texture.Much better than the bread you buy at the store. Plus when you make it at home it is always fresh. I will be trying the rye and plain white next.

Great machine, great manual5
Litmus test: I nailed a great loaf on my first attempt.

This machine is in a different league from my old Sunbeam. It comes with a bunch of preset cycles, but you can set the duration of individual stages (e.g. "3rd Rise").

The manual is well written. Not only is it full of useful information, but it is also a pleasant read; manuals nowadays are often very poorly translated into English, and you have to spend a long time trying to figure out what they're trying to say. This one is great in comparison.

So far I've had no problems with belts, or anything else. It really works well. That said, a couple of suggestions:

1) Stick around for the first few minutes of kneading. You may have to push some dry ingredients off the corner of the pan with the handle of a wooden spoon. The pan is longer than in most breadmakers, and dough may stick furthest from the paddle. Once the machine develops the ball, though, the problem goes away.

2) If the machine is not in a very well-lit area, you may have some difficulty seeing the LCD panel and seeing the bread inside the window. I fixed that by keeping a $1 flashlight close to the bread machine.

3) Pay attention to the table in the manual with equivalences between different kinds of yeast. That may make the difference between getting a loaf to be proud of and a loaf to be scared of...

Great machine for bread!5
I recently purchased the Ultimate Dream Machine and have been using it a few times a week since that time. It is very easy to use and makes a wonderful loaf of bread. I've made several different varieties and all have tasted great. Both the texture and flavor are far superior to anything you pick up in the bread aisle of your local grocery store.

The bread pan is not exactly what I would consider heavy weight so I wouldn't bang it around in the sink when you are cleaning it. However, the mixing blade itself is very sturdy and easy to remove from the pan after baking. The interior of the machine has needed very little cleaning. Just a damp paper towel to wipe out any flour that has puffed out of the pan during mixing.

As a single person, I have primarily been using the 1.5 lb loaf size. I usually still have some left overs at the end of a week and give those to the birds. I would think that the 2.5 lb loaf would be a good size for a family with the 2.0 lb size being perfect for a couple.

I would recommend this machine for it's ease of use, benefit to cost ratio, and consistent superior results.

Yes This Is The TR40005
Amazon has it as the T4000 i guess they just forgot to put the R in there. They are selling it for $99.00 while everybody else is selling it for $217.00-$250.00. This is really a ultimate bread machine. You can put your own recipes in the memory or change the kneading,resting, or baking cycles to really fine tune your bread. The touch pad is really user friendly. All you have to do is touch the pad and pull up a recipe, no looking it up in the book. It's all there on the LCD screen. I bought this for making sourdough bread from my own sourdough cultures. There is several sourdough recipes in the book but they use yeast in them so that's not true sourdough bread. I have my own cultures some i started myself, and others i bought from sourdoughs international great website. I also picked up Ed Woods book " Classic Sourdoughs" available here or at his website that has a ton of info and has many hand and sourdough machine recipes and techniques in it. I'm really loving the flexability of this machine. You can program anywhere from 2 - 48 hrs rest for your sourdough to rest and ferment. This is a true sourdough machine and so much more. Comes with a short video that's helpful in the use and features of the machine plus a big recipe book and a really nice usermanual.

My favorite bread machine book5
My mom had this book and I had copied so many recipes out of it, I finally just had to buy my own. She is on her second copy. This is hands down my favorite bread machine book. The Sunday Morning Apricot Bread, Apple Butter Wheat, Onion Soup Bread, Sauerkraut Rye...all big winners. The garlic-cheese rolls should be illegal. Fluffy, light, buttery...mmmmmm.

PS My loaves have never collapsed or been overly salty (and I'm sensitive to that), but they do require a bit more flour. This is probably due to my machine and not the recipes, which are well-tested.

Don't give up on your bread machine until you try this!5
After the first year using my bread machine, I found that the recipes that came with it weren't working as well. I resorted to bread-machine mixes from the store. Until I saw this at the library. Every recipe I've tried has been great. I regret I haven't tried more but we keep making the same ones - they are so good!

The book has a great intro section that educates you about ingredients, such as keeping yeast in the freezer to extend its life. There is a large range of recipes. And, my favorite feature, each recipe gives measures for 3 loaf sizes. I have made each size based on the number eating. I am not big on cooking; this book gives great results for your kitchen time.

I am ordering a copy of this and the next book (More Bread Machine Magic). I plan on giving one to my sister and keeping one for myself. The hard part will be deciding which one to keep!

Breads you'll actually eat!5
After we got our bread machine, we received a 600+ page bread machine cookbook. The recipes we tried were quite involved and tasteless. I had all but given up until I read the reviews for Bread Machine Magic. The reviewers are right. This cookbook is spectacular. I've tried three of the breads already--Sweet Oatmeal, Marmalade and Oats and Oatmeal Spice-- and they all are melt-in-your-mouth fantastic. Today I'm going to make Rick's Seven Grain which I have no doubt will be another Rehberg and Conway winner. Buy this book and your bread machine will actually be used regularly rather than never seeing daylight in the deepest corner of your cupboard.
